History
Constructed in 1732 by Peshwa Baji Rao I, it served as the seat of Maratha power.Shaniwar Wada is one of the most important historical landmarks in Pune. It was commissioned in 1730 by Bajirao I, the powerful Peshwa (prime minister) of the Maratha Empire, as the seat of Peshwa governance.
The fort-palace quickly became the political heart of the Maratha Confederacy. Built with massive stone ramparts, teak gates, and intricate wooden halls, it symbolized Maratha power and prosperity.
In 1828, a devastating fire destroyed much of the palace’s wooden structures. What survives today are the strong outer walls, gates like the famous Delhi Darwaza, foundations of the palace, and landscaped courtyards — all echoing the former royal grandeur.
Today, Shaniwar Wada stands as a major heritage site, known for its history, architecture, and the popular evening light-and-sound show that narrates the story of the Peshwas.
